Historic Taekwondo Action in Nairobi: 2025 World Taekwondo Under 21 Championships

From December 3 to December 6, 2025, Nairobi, Kenya proudly hosted the very first World Taekwondo Under 21 Championships, placing the country firmly on the global stage of Taekwondo excellence. The historic event was organised by World Taekwondo in collaboration with the Kenya Taekwondo Federation at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
A New Chapter for Young Taekwondo Athletes
The Under 21 Championships brought together young competitors aged 17 to 21 from across the world. Over 450 athletes from more than 75 countries competed in 16 weight categories for both men and women, creating a highly competitive and exciting championship.
This event marked a significant milestone for global Taekwondo, offering rising stars an opportunity to gain valuable world level experience before progressing to senior competitions.
Exciting Competitions and Great Performances
Each day of the championships delivered thrilling matches and outstanding performances. Athletes from countries such as Türkiye, Iran, Korea, Greece, Brazil, and many others showcased exceptional skill, discipline, and determination in their pursuit of medals.
On the final day of competition, Türkiye, Kazakhstan, Tunisia, and neutral athletes claimed gold medals in key finals. The Men’s 68kg and Women’s 46kg categories were among the most watched and competitive bouts of the tournament.
Champions were crowned across multiple weight classes, highlighting the depth and quality of young Taekwondo talent from around the world.
Awards and Recognition
During the closing ceremony, medals and special awards were presented to recognise exceptional performances and contributions throughout the championships.
The Most Valuable Player award in the men’s category was awarded to Abolfazl Zandi of Iran, while the women’s Most Valuable Player award went to Milana Bekulova, who competed as a neutral athlete. Kenya also received an Active Participation Award in recognition of its involvement and contribution to the event.
Coaches and referees from various countries were also honoured for their professionalism and dedication to ensuring the success of the championships.
Kenya on the World Stage
Hosting this prestigious global event was a proud moment for Kenya’s sporting community. It demonstrated the country’s ability to provide world class facilities, effective organisation, and a welcoming environment for major international competitions.
Athletes, coaches, officials, and visitors from Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Americas came together in Nairobi, creating lasting friendships and unforgettable memories while celebrating the spirit of Taekwondo.
Looking Ahead
The success of the Nairobi 2025 World Taekwondo Under 21 Championships has set a strong benchmark for future editions. World Taekwondo has confirmed that the next championships will be hosted in Samokov, Bulgaria in 2027.
