UNESCO ICM 10th Martial Arts Open School Programme

The Mombasa County Taekwondo Association (MCTA) is proud to celebrate the successful completion of the first month of implementing the UNESCO ICM 10th Martial Arts Open School Programme in Mombasa County.

Hosted at Patana Academy, Likoni Sub-County, the programme has brought together over 180 enthusiastic participants, creating a vibrant learning environment where martial arts and education go hand in hand.

One Month of Learning and Impact

Over the past month, participants have successfully engaged in a range of activities designed to develop physical fitness, discipline, education, environmental responsibility, and leadership skills.

Taekwondo Training

Participants have taken part in Taekwondo training focused on physical fitness, discipline, confidence, teamwork, and leadership, helping young people develop both on and off the mat.

Global Citizenship Education (GCED)

Learners successfully completed the Diversity chapter and commenced the Inclusion chapter. These lessons promote respect for different cultures, equal participation, empathy, and responsible citizenship.

Martial Arts Physical Fitness (MAPF)

Participants also completed Martial Arts Physical Fitness (MAPF) assessments to establish baseline fitness data. These assessments will help monitor and measure participants' progress throughout the programme.

Community Service

Community service has been an important part of the programme. Participants took part in a successful beach clean-up exercise alongside the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), Kenya Police Service, Office of the DCC Likoni, and Beach Management Unit.

Together, participants collected over 50 kg of waste while raising awareness about environmental conservation, marine life protection, and responsible waste management.

Building Responsible Global Citizens

This remarkable milestone reflects the commitment of our participants, coaches, parents, volunteers, partner schools, and stakeholders who continue to support the vision of using martial arts to develop responsible, confident, and active global citizens.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the UNESCO International Centre of Martial Arts (ICM) for making this life-changing programme possible and to everyone who continues to support youth development through sports and education.

The journey has just begun, and we look forward to many more weeks of learning, growth, community service, and empowerment.
